THE WEEKLY EDGE for the week ahead of Monday 21 to Friday 25 September 2026, with a full look-back on the week of Monday 14 to Friday 18 September 2026.
This week's highlights
- The Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan all tightened policy within the same eight-day stretch, while the Bank of England held rates but split 6-3 in a hawkish direction.
- Drone strikes on Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline briefly pushed oil sharply higher and revived inflation fears just as policymakers met; WTI still finished the week down almost 4% once the worst-case supply scenario failed to materialise.
- Equities were mixed: the Dow fell around 1.7% and European bourses broadly softened, while the Nasdaq 100 gained close to 1% and the Nikkei 225 rebounded almost 2% after a sharp mid-week sell-off.
- The US dollar had its best week in months on the Fed's hike, even as the yen weakened on a dovish-read BoJ vote; gold and silver both firmed as Treasury yields eased back from their post-Fed peak.
- The week ahead, 21 to 25 September, has no scheduled meetings from the Fed, ECB, BoE, BoJ or BoC. Focus shifts to Wednesday's global flash PMIs and Thursday's Xi-Trump summit in Washington, alongside a cluster of smaller central-bank decisions and Australian jobs data.
