Natural Gas Fades the September Surge as Storage Builds Pile Up — The Weekly Gas Edge, 3 October 2026
HARKO Day TradingShare
Natural gas gave back almost all of its late-September gains this week, sliding 2.3% as record production and an above-consensus storage build reasserted the market's bearish fundamentals.
Spot NYMEX/IG natural gas opened Monday 28 September at $3.106 — already a weekend gap lower from the prior Friday's $3.225 close — and spent four sessions grinding lower before a short-covering bounce on Friday lifted it back to $3.035, down 2.3% on the five-day week and roughly 5.9% below the prior Friday's close. The move unwound much of the late-September, outage-driven surge: once the pipeline premium drained away, mild October weather, near-record production and a storage build above consensus left the market with little reason to hold its highs.
What moved gas this week
- Monday — Held the weekend gap lower and firmed as the November contract took over as prompt, closing $3.139, up 1.06%.
- Tuesday — The heavy day: no single headline, just a steady repricing as the outage premium faded, production held near record highs and storage sat comfortably above the five-year average. Closed $3.019, down 3.79%, the week's biggest down day.
- Wednesday — A quiet month-end drift around the $3.00 round number. Closed $3.002, off 0.54%.
- Thursday — Storage day. The EIA reported a 64 Bcf injection for the week ended 25 September, about 1 Bcf above the roughly 63 Bcf consensus, lifting stocks to 3,415 Bcf. Price slipped to a fresh weekly low, closing $2.948, down 1.83%.
- Friday — A break below $3.00 to a week low of $2.912, then a technical short-covering bounce back to a $3.035 close, up 2.95%, closing the week back above both 200 EMAs.
The week in numbers
- Week high / low: $3.177 (Monday) / $2.912 (Friday)
- 5-day ATR: $0.109 (≈109 IG points) — roughly half the prior week's volatility
- EIA storage: +64 Bcf for the week ended 25 September, above the ≈63 Bcf consensus; stocks at 3,415 Bcf, +2.4% above the five-year average and −3.9% below last year
- Trend regime (Friday's close): BULLISH, but marginal — price closed just above both the 1-hour 200 EMA ($3.011) and the 4-hour 200 EMA ($2.945)
The week ahead: 5–9 October
The picture is two-sided but tilts gently lower. Friday's bounce nudged the regime back to nominally bullish, but the two trend filters have converged right under the market, and the fundamentals remain unhelpful — production close to record highs, storage running 2.4% above the five-year average and headed for a near-record level by end-October, and mild weather offering little heating demand. The pivot for the week is Thursday 8 October's EIA storage print at 15:30 UK: another comfortable, above-normal build would reinforce the bearish balance and press the $3.00 handle, while a surprise draw would be the print that validates Friday's bounce. Without a genuine cold-weather catalyst, rallies into the $3.14–3.18 resistance band look more likely to be sold than extended.
